Professional to me means skilled at something above the normal level of others to the point where that person can be a resource for that thing. To act professional would then mean to act in a manner that is above the normal level of conduct. Is being professional an act? In some cases for some people it is an act. To dress up in a suit, speak with no slang, sit upright, etc. These are all things that people will often do but it is not their natural manner of conduct, so for them it would be an act. But for others it would be more just how they are. Some people like to dress up in dress pants and shirts naturally. Some people like to use big words and naturally do. While others still like to have "proper" posture. Yet there are others who it is natural for them to "dress for the occasion" so to speak.
