What does editing mean to me?

Editing means correcting grammer, spelling, and improving the organization of a document.

What experience do I have with editing?

I have edited papers for classmates, reports at work, and my own papers.

What does technical editing mean?

Technical editing is more than grammer and spelling. Technical editing is improving the concepts and purpose of a document.

Grammar Terms

clause - a group of closely related words containing a subject and a verb

independent clause - a clause that can stand by itself, i.e., contains subject and verb

dependent clause - cannot stand on its own; requires relative pronoun or subordinating conjunction

adjective - modifies a noun or pronoun

adverb - modifies a verb, noun, clause or phrase (aswers who, what, when, wh, how)

noun - used to name a person, animal, place, or thing

verb - expresses actions

preposition - links nouns, pronouns, and phrases

definite article -(the) indicates a specific thing

indefinite article - (a, an) do not refer to a specific thing

subject - performs action of verb

direct object - recieves action of verb

indirect object - tells to whom or for whom action is done

transitive - must take a direct object

intransitive - cannot take a direct object

comma splice - a comma that joins two independent clauses without a conjunction

fragment - incomplete sentence

prounoun - replaces a noun or another pronoun

predicate - the verb and the words that recieve the action of the verb

demonstrative adjective - (this, that, these, those) indicates or singles out what is referred to

phrase - a group of words that act as a unit

conjunction

coordinating - connects parts of a sentence (and, but, or, for, nor, so)
subordinating - joins subordinate clause to main clause

relative pronouns - relate groups of words to other nouns/pronouns (that, which, whichever, who, whoever, whom, whomever, whose, and of which)

sentence types

simple - contains subject and verb

compound - two independent clauses linked by a coordinating conjuction

complex - an independent clause linked by one or more dependent clause

compound-complex - two independent clauses, which may contain one or more dependent clause each, linked by a coordinating conjunction
