ENGL 427 Technical Editing

Dilbert | Terms | Relative Pronouns | The Elephants of Style | Client Project

What does editing mean to me?

A piece of writing ultimately can never reach a point when it cannot be further improved, however, editing helps bring the work one step closer distribution into the reader's hands. Editing involves the correction of grammer, punctuation, and sentence structure. An editor also ensures that the entire piece creates the effect that the writer intended. Through an editor, a piece of writing is molded into a form that is easily understood by the intended audience.

What experience do I have with editing?

Most of my experiences in editing are from classes and homework assignments. For example, I took a formal journalism editing class- "Copy Editing". In this class, we learned the rules regarding punctuation and grammar. Most of the other classes that I have taken within the English Department also involve in-class peer editing. Peer editing primarily dealt with grammatical issues, and was not content oriented.

What then, does Technical Editing mean?

Technical editing has all of the components of editing as written above, but more specialized. Technical writers do not write for themselves, they write for a specified, particular audience. When I think of technical editing, I have an idealized version that the pieces will be of a more specialized nature/material. Not only that, but a technical editor has to have the ability to express the author's intent through other methods other than paragraphs- meaning editing charts, graphs, and bulleted lists. The technical editor also especially needs to ensure that the piece is compatible to the needs of the audience- meaning it is written in a matter that is easily understood.

Areas of knowledge:

Hmmmm... I like to think of myself as being "average" across the board- meaning that I have a little bit of knowledge about a lot of things. Or, at least I like to believe that I do.

  • Public Relations
  • AP Style
  • Journalism
  • Editing
  • Public Speaking
  • American Government
  • The Supreme Court
  • Constitutional Law
  • I've been told that I know the most random, pointless facts of anyone they know- I can hold my own during a Friends (the show) trivia game :-)
  • Procrastination (If it's possible to be specialized in this area, then call me an expert)
  • Knitting (No, I'm not an old lady)

I'm primarily interested in law and politics. Not only am I a Professional Writing major, I am also majoring in Political Science, where my concentration has focused on American Law. I'm familiar with some aspects of Constitutional Law and the Supreme Court. Just don't ask me for any legal advice yet though! First I have to get in, and then pass three years of law school (ahHH!)

As odd as it sounds, you could also say that I am very knowledgeable in Eastern Michigan University. This year, as serving as the Vice-President, I've certainly learned the "ins-and-outs" of the university and could probably refer you to any individual who could help you with a problem.
