WritingBackground

I like to think everyone writes at least a little each day. Whether someone is taking notes for school, talking to his or her friend via an instant messaging program, writing an email, or using Facebook, we all write very often.

My writing history is fairly simple. After grade school, I could whip out an essay in one night. I know, that's not the way it should be done, right? Well, my knack for quick writing got me interested in journalism, which is now my major. How quick writing and journalism relate is easy to explain - when journalists finish an interview with any contact for a particular story (usually at a daily newspaper), they are usually already thinking of what they will write on the trip back to the office. Most of the time, stories are on deadline, so the story has to be written sometimes in the span of one to three hours.

Now that I am being taught all of the aspects of objective reporting and choosing my words more carefully, my quick writing is not as quick as is used to be. In spite of my newfound slowness, I have worked at the Eastern Echo since last year. I found that writing for an actual publication makes me take my writing more seriously, and I am truly intrigued by the overall journalism process. In addition, I have recently started an internship with the Michigan Business Review, so hopefully I will take a great deal of professional knowledge from this class as well as from my internship, and deepen my experience with writing.
