This was taken from Raymond Germain's Introduction Memo. I chose to examine the first part, a part he entitled "School Life."

Connections/Claims:

  • "I have been a fixture at the Mac labs in Pray Harold these last few semesters and want to learn as much as I can about how to use them for both professional and not professional activities."
  • "I tend to ask a lot of questions about how things work..."
  • "I have always had an affinity for math..."
  • "It is a bit early to tell but of this semester's core computer classes I am most excited for the hands on portion of my networking class."

Support

  • "I am a fan of the Apples because there is such a better user experience involved than with the PC platform."
  • "I tend to ask a lot of questions about how things work, so that's why my favorite classes out of the classes I have already taken are in the Physics department."
  • "I have always had an affinity for math and these classes intrigued me because they taught of how and why things behave the way they do."
  • "This motivation to learn how things work drew me to computers since I have always been interested by them since back when my family got their first computer when I was real young."

Analysis

Ray's memo is very long, and it details a lot of personal things about himself. There are a lot of things that are technical-related that I didn't mention, such as his job as a Parts Manager at his local AutoZone. But for the sake of analyzing one part of it, I chose to do the first paragraph.

The first two claims Ray makes are of interest. They both can be connected to the audience, our ENG 324 class and Professor Benninghoff, and could single him out as a source of help for Mac related questions. Since we're using Macs exclusively, this makes it related. His support for the claim, "I am a fan of Apples..." indicates why he feels the way he does and supports his claim that Apples are better because of his belief in a better user experience.

The second claim Ray makes, "I tend to ask a lot of questions about how things work..." is interesting because that was a question that was posed to us the very first day of class by our Professor. He wants us to think about writing, the audience, who we're thinking about, and the purpose of our writing. In a sense, we're thinking metaphysically about writing. So, I believe there's some relatedness there, to our classwork, and to a lesser extent our classmates, too.

His support for the second claim, mentioning his enjoyment of Physics classes aren't really connected with what we do here, but the idea that he's curious about how things work is important.
