“Professional Experience” as an Account Manager for LabCorp in Danville, VA During this stint of my employment with this company I had a variety of duties that ran the gamut from answering phones to picking up lab specimens. I was able to get to k now the nurses and some of the docs that worked in the offices and learned a lot about Southern culture from them as I was a true blue Yankee and unwise to the mysterious ways of the south. Within the official capacity of this job I learned about customer service and how to bite my tongue. I picked up quite a few skills, such as data entry, how to sort and process specimens and how to draw blood and collect a urine specimen. I learned that minor league ball players don’t like anyone testing their urine for drugs. I knew what blood test required a certain color tube, and how that tube needed to be stored (frozen, etc.) in order for the blood to be viable for testing. I learned how to run a centrifuge and how to draw serum away from the red cells without disturbing the clot.

Different ways this can be relevant:

  • leadership experience -- the supervisors that I had, as well as my experience as a supervisor (training the guy that left because was intimidated by me)
  • cultural relevance/problems with misunderstanding another culture (tone of voice, different expectations)
  • work relationships: coworkers, w/clients, with upper management
  • skills learned
  • responsibilities
  • integrity -- my own, those of my coworkers, how that affects the work environment
  • specific experiences -- positive and negative (having to lie to my boss'husband because she was my boss AND we were friends)
