Ordering Information for Understanding
- Develop a visual logic for text. Design the document for the audience. Horizontal design means that a reader can look at a page and see segments distinguished clearly from one another. Vertical design has continuity between units. I think I will use the chunking method of page design techniques for my FM.
Thinking About Document Design
- Text size is determined by the shape you want the page to take. Create unity throughout the page with consistent use of color, consistent placement on the page, and consistent use of type. Color, texture, size, and proportions must blend. Contrast and emphasis can be used to direct the reader's attention.
Style, Audience, and the Arrangement of Information
- Order, arrange, and lay out your text so that the visual design of the information itself helps the reader understand what you are trying to convey. Direct arrangement of information states the problem directly first, and then provides detail.
The Non Designers Design Book
- There are four basic principles to design. Proximity groups together items related to each other. Alignment says every item should have a visual connection with something else on the page. Repitition is used to repeat some aspect of the design throughout the entire piece. You should avoid repeating the element so much that it becomes annoying or overwhelming. Contrasting two elements on the page that are not the same will draw our eyes to it.
