Why Tech Comm Matters Project

The Why Tech Comm Matters (WTCM) project has every person in the class present about a communication situation in a context they are very familiar with, to show how the tech comm understanding you've gained in the course relates to a wide array of

Products:

  • Proposal
  • Presentation
  • Report (the talk written out)

Rough Outline:

  • Introduction/Title slide
Title of Pres, Talking Head, Name, Date
  • Intro to Area of Expertise
    • What do people do here?
    • How do they talk/communicate? (lead in to ...)
    • A Particular Communication Problem (& Consequences)
Should this come here, or after audience analysis below?
  • Audience Analysis
    • Characteristics due to Role
    • Characteristics due to Inviduals
    • Other potential breakdowns?
  • Share examples of how to design for this situation and audience
    • One way to tailor for this situation
    • Second way to tailor for this situation
    • Third way . . . " . . . " (won't have time for more than 1 in pres to class, but these should be in your write up)
  • Review
    • Recap the presentation--reference briefly what audience is like, problem, response

About Proposals:

  • Proposals are asking permission to do the project on your particular topic.
  • Memo Form--these are "informal proposals" in the reading. Many of the sections in the reading have to do with more complex proposals like bids for contracts or services. Still, this proposal is trying to convince the reader that this is a good solution, worth taking a shot at.

Sections: Each should have the section head and the talking head. Sections can have subheadings if needed.

  • Overview: As with our other memos, explains what this document is, the problem or need, and how the document is going to do its tasks.
  • Problem: Problem section explains the problem that you need a topic that fits the criteria of the assignment, so then the problem section needs to re-explain the assignment.
  • Proposed Solution: Works through how your topic fits the criteria--making the argument this would be a good choice for the assignment.
